Picking a wedding dress for your Fiji destination wedding has been made easier for brides-to-be, reluctant to fork out top dollar for a gown they will only ever wear once. A new business has been established in Nadi, giving brides an opportunity to rent an outfit, shoes and all.
Bridal Hire Fiji is the brainchild of Margarita Bellchambers from Making Memories Fiji, a company that operates a private charter boat for groups for their special occasion, including wedding groups and hens parties. The newly launched business eliminates some of the stress and cost for brides travelling to Fiji to marry. (Stress such as transporting your gown and costs such as renting a dress from an outlet in Australia for the duration of your wedding and honeymoon while abroad).
Bridal Hire Fiji was envisaged following an encounter between Bellchambers and wedding dress designer, Wendy Makin from Wendy Makin Wedding Designs, at a recent Bridal Expo in Queensland. Putting their heads together, the concept of hiring gowns to brides coming to Fiji to wed was born.
Makin is recognised as one the Australia’s top bridal wear designers. After more than 30 years in the field, her gowns have become renowned for their quality of design, fit and manufacture, using only the best fabrics and laces from across the globe.
Makin generously donated a collection of wedding and evening gowns to Bridal Hire Fiji. Dresses that are usually stocked across her many outlets found Australia-wide. And Bridal Hire Fiji now have around 15 wedding gowns and 25 bridesmaid/evening gowns that can be rented. There’s also a few mother-of-the-bride dress options too.
The styles vary to accommodate for a range of tastes for today’s bride. Most are strapless (there are a few strap options as well), ranging from size 8 through to 20, Bellchambers told I Do Fiji Holidays.
The concept is also unique in that a percentage of rental costs will go to charity.
The great thing about hiring is the bride doesn’t have to worry about carrying a huge dress and sometimes having to pay for an extra seat on the plane,
Not to mention the huge saving by hiring, and the thought of helping orphans or women in refuges,
Bridal Hire Fiji has also got its hands on a range of older dresses which can be used for Drown the Gown photo sessions, if a bride is hesitant to take her own into the ocean.
A bridal studio at the Rejuvenation Centre/transit lounge (not far from Nadi Airport and town) was then made available through Debra Sadranu, providing a location for overseas brides to get fitted.
I was curious, how do brides will know if the dress they pick will fit their body shape?
After a dress is chosen from the catalogue and size picked and a full body photograph supplied, the in-house tailor will make any necessary adjustments for the bride until she arrives for her first fitting.
Bridal Hire Fiji provides flexible gown/dress rental periods, enabling brides to relax and enjoy their time in Fiji. If a wedding is in Nadi, it’s appreciated if the attire is returned the next day, or a couple of days later should a wedding be on an island.
As we are all about making the bride’s experience stress-free, we can collect the bride from the airport, bring her straight to the Rejuvenation Centre when she can try on her gown for ease-of-mind that the fitting is perfect for her day.
As part of the hire service, Bridal Hire Fiji offers a choice of footwear and accessories, such as western style head pieces or traditional and island style headwear, made from tropical Fijian flowers.
Prices start at FJ$350 per wedding gown and FJ$250 for bridesmaid/cocktail dresses, inclusive of alterations.
To give brides an idea of the range of options available, I’m previewing a gallery of images of gowns/dresses that can be rented with Bridal Hire Fiji in today’s issue on page 3.
